Why have a preorder (or P#) plan?

The P# program exists for one simple reason, to essentially cover the printing costs of any given product with customer commitments to buy that product. While we have a fairly solid base of customers, we are a small publishing company that could ill-afford to print several titles which we may feel are interesting but our customers have no interest in buying. We are still taking risks, in that we are investing considerable time and money into getting projects ready to be preordered, but we are cutting out the largest risk, printing costs, until we are sure that we'll sell a reasonable amount of any given product.

What's in it for the customer?

Well, the customer will have some say in what we produce, and what order we produce it in. The titles on our preorder list may vary from a few to many, depending on what's ready to go to press, but no game will go to press until the customers say so. You are, essentially, voting with your dollars. In exchange for this very useful feedback, we're giving customers who preorder a 25% discount off the retail price of a product. You still have to pay shipping and handling, however.

What about my local store?

Orders from retailers will affect the final number which a product must "hit" to be produced. So if you have a local game store please continue to use them! Nothing beats being able to pick up, fondle, look over, and otherwise investigate the game itself. Stores may not give you a "pre-order" discount (that is entirely up to them), but taking into consideration postage and handling the cost difference is probably fairly insignificant and it may be worth it for you to have a chance to see the product.

OK, how does it work?

We take a title and develop it and playtest it as usual. Assuming it doesn't turn out to be unworkable, eventually we are satisfied that the project has finished the design/development phase and is ready for publication. At this time, some (if not all) of the layout of the project will be finished as well. We will then figure out the retail cost and preorder number based on the components of the game, and post that game as available for preorder on our website. The website will have examples of the box, map, counters, possibly even the rules to the game. If those elements are not yet laid out, then they will be added to the page as they are completed. The preorder page will list the retail cost, the preorder cost, how many preorders have been received as well as the number of preorders that are required for that title to get printed (the P#), which will is established on a title by title basis. If you wish to preorder the game, click on the preorder button and fill out the appropriate fields for your address and payment information.

Once the title has received the necessary number of preorders, we send it off to the printer and start the production cycle. There may be a small delay in this phase if the layout of the title is not yet complete, but there should -not- be any surprises at this point that would affect the production or delivery of this game. Once the game is printed, collated, shrink-wrapped, and ready to ship, we bill your credit card and ship the game to you.

It is important to note that you are not billed for this game until the game is ready to be shipped. In most instances, you are not billed until the day your preorder ships! So, there is really no risk for you at all! If the game never "hits" then you are never billed!

IMPORTANT: Due to ever rising gas prices and surcharges charged by FedEx/UPS there may be changes made to postage rates while your preorder is waiting to "hit". We will announce any changes to the postage tables on public forums and our news link on our website. FWIW, we have changed the postage tables three times in the 6 or so years we have been doing preorders.

What if I change my mind?

Just contact us either by phone or email and ask to have your preorder deleted. Please do so prior to us printing a product, once a title "hits" we're counting on your commitment to get this job done. You can reach us at 410-729-3334 or sales@multimanpublishing.com.

That seems easy, what about reprints?

The joy of the P# program is that our risk is minimized so we are more likely to try different things. Reprinting long out-of-print titles like DAK or Omaha is not a risk anymore so you should see the opportunity to preorder these titles in the future.

Can I preorder by phone? Email? Snailmail?

Sure. Our standard contact methods will all work, you just have to provide us with the shipping and billing information we need.

How will we get updates?

You can keep track of how a title is progressing on the preorder page on our website, and we will announce when a product "hits" its number, when it goes to the printer, and when it starts to ship. New titles will go up on the website as soon as they are ready to be preordered. We post frequently on www.consimworld.com, the ASL mailing list, and the Gamers mailing list, and we try to have a flyer (even if just a B&W one) available to send to you at your request (info@multimanpublishing.com). We'll be putting those flyers up on our website in pdf format as well.
